Texting Etiquette

I text, you text, the professor texts, her Grandmother texts and even the President texts. Why? It's a more convenient way of communication. Texting, or SMS (short message service) has been rising as the most popular form of communication for almost two decades. Below we've left you some advice on texting:

texting etiquette1. Text Briefly: Text with reason and keep it brief. Full-fledged conversations through text messaging can be strenuous on the eyes and have been linked to carpal tunnel syndrome.

2. Professional Text: If you decide to go in the route of texting a professional, text in the same format that they respond. In other words, start texting formally and if they text back in abbreviated format then you may do the same.

3. Grammatical Text: R u GiViNg da rite impression?

4. Double Check Your Text: Avoid having a minor heart attack when you see "Sent to: the person you did not want to see your text." Of course we all make mistakes, but just take a moment to approve the sender to avoid this.

5. When to Text: As the saying goes, "there is a time and place for everything." Some places you should not text: work, class, on a date, after several cocktails and most importantly, while driving.

6. Mass Text: By sending personalized invitational texts, the recipient is more inclined to respond.

7. Photo Text: Be tasteful; remember that there is an electronic trail that may haunt you one day.

8. Awaiting a Text: Keep in mind your recipient's schedule so you're not always expecting an immediate response.

9. In Text vs In Person: If the meaning of your text is questionable, just wait to say it in person. Ie: Avoid sarcasm or topics that require discussions like break ups, firing someone, telling someone you saw their girlfriend hooking up with someone else, etc.

10. Text Lingo: If you are a new texter or need the low down go to noslang.com
